It’s been found that over a third of employees of small businesses find flexible working schedules to be conducive of contentment, while minimizing burnout. As a way to balance rising demands on work as well as personal time, it’s more and more of a necessity for small businesses to permit employees to work remotely and with flexible hours. Employees are not merely intent on balancing work with their personal lives, but want to blend them both together.

The key to this is that employers trust their employees to achieve what it is that they must do and in the confines of a time frame that’s suitable to the job at hand, irrespective that this is no longer done within the traditional hours of 9 to 5.

And what this entails is that employees can arrive a little after 9, once they’ve taken the kids to school; they can leave earlier to coach basketball practice; or, they can head out for a dental appointment, safe in the knowledge that they can complete the work later that same day.

This concept allows individuals to juggle their work lives and their personal lives to suit, thereby generating a more contented workforce overall.

Employees should be encouraged to step away

It should certainly not be viewed negatively that employees take more work breaks, whereby they can network with fellow employees. After all, some of the very best ideas arise when not actually doing work.

Research has shown that as many as half the workforce in small businesses feel unable to step away from their desk to have a break while at work. And, over one third of employees in small businesses said that if they were encouraged to partake in this practice by their employers it would help them to alleviate any opportunity for burnout.

There are a few ideas for which to encourage more breaks at work and that is to stock up the breakroom by making it more comfortable and offering incentives that are compelling such as free snacks and drinks.

Rework the e-mailing methodology

One of the main reasons, if not the main reason that employees feel they rarely get away from their work is because they are always connected to their e-mail. The small-business employee is now bombarded with e-mail at any time of day or night. What’s more, they feel compelled to make a reply because it may be considered as “bad practice” to simply ignore the sender.

As much as half of the employees of small businesses state that they are on the receiving end of far too many e-mails, while a third say that because of the colossal number of e-mails they receive, it negatively impacts their productivity at work. As a way to ensure that less e-mails are answered after working hours, the management ought to mark any messages that must be responded to rapidly with “urgent.”

Make meetings structured and actionable

The majority of workplaces have too many meetings, while most meetings are seen to be ineffective and not worthy of the time investment. Though small-business employees do in fact invest less time in work meetings than the remainder of the working population, still, over a quarter do say that there’s a general level of inefficiency.

That said, rather than having a meeting for the sake of it, set up a single meeting each week which is both structured as well as actionable. That way, every employee will have far more time to consider working issues and thus, every meeting will now serve a valuable purpose.

Align office space and culture.

Studies have also revealed that employees that work in small businesses tend to have a greater tolerance for distractions. Some 41 percent of the workforce said that an environment that is distraction-free would have a large impact on their level of productivity. This is in comparison to 50 percent of the remainder of the working population.

Nevertheless, there is a general agreement that coworkers that are very loud serve as the top distraction. This equates to office design whereby it is highly individualized. With respect to some company cultures, where regular communication and collaboration are very important, employees will likely enjoy an open office environment. In others, more personal space is key. However, the fact remains that no one size fits every approach.
